How to Rent a Motorcycle for Vacation in 7 Steps

Booking a motorcycle rental for when you travel takes less time and effort than most people expect. On Riders Share, you can go from browsing bikes to a confirmed booking in about five minutes, and once you've done it the first time, every trip after that gets even faster. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

Pick Your Destination
Choose Your Bike
Select Your Insurance
Confirm Your License
Pack Your Gear
Coordinate Pickup
Plan on How to Return the Bike

Step 1. Pick Your Destination

Where you're headed determines everything from what bike you'll want to what gear you should pack, when to go, and how long to rent. On Riders Share, you can search by city and browse available bikes, pricing, and local routes before committing to anything, so you'll know what's out there before you book a flight or plan a single mile.

We cover 10 of the best fly and ride motorcycle destinations with airport info and route recommendations later in this guide.

Step 2. Choose Your Bike

Touring bikes like the Harley-Davidson Road Glide are built for long highway miles and all-day comfort, which makes them a natural pick for multi-day motorcycle road trips. Standard and naked bikes give you more agility for shorter rides around a city or through mountain roads. Adventure bikes like the BMW R 1300 GS and Honda Africa Twin are built for dirt, gravel, and unpaved terrain.

On Riders Share, you can filter listings by brand, type, price, and location, and most owners include photos, descriptions, and reviews from previous renters so you'll have a clear picture of the bike before you commit.

Step 3. Select Your Insurance

Insurance is the part of motorcycle vacation planning where the cost difference between platforms shows up the most. A five-day rental can go for $150 or more in coverage costs alone depending on where you book, and what you're actually protected against looks completely different across Riders Share, Twisted Road, and EagleRider.

Does Rental Motorcycle Insurance Cover You?

Riders Share's insurance covers you from the moment your trip starts, and you choose your plan at checkout. Coverage tiers range from a basic damage waiver to a premium plan with $30,000 in damage protection, a $500 deductible, and zero security deposit. You can also add supplemental liability coverage up to $1 million for $20 to $30/day, an option that Twisted Road and EagleRider don't offer in their standard plans.

Something that catches a lot of first-time renters off guard: most personal motorcycle insurance policies do not extend to rental bikes. Even with full coverage on your own motorcycle back home, you're most likely not protected when riding someone else's.

Step 4. Confirm Your License

Every rental platform in the U.S. requires a motorcycle endorsement, but the age requirements, experience rules, and verification process look a little different on each one.

Do You Need a Motorcycle License to Rent One?

A valid motorcycle license or M endorsement is required to rent a motorcycle anywhere in the U.S. On Riders Share, you also need to:

Be 21 or older (riders under 25 need at least 3 years of riding experience)
Provide a valid phone number and email address
Check out with a credit or debit card

International travelers can rent with a valid foreign motorcycle license by selecting their country of origin during sign-up, and EU riders need to carry the \"A\" class. Our international motorcycle riding and rental guide covers the full breakdown for non-U.S. riders.

Step 5. Pack Your Gear

Motorcycle trips don't leave much room for extra bags, so what you bring needs to earn its spot. Riding gear takes up the most space and weight, which is why a lot of renters on Riders Share choose to rent their gear alongside the bike instead of packing it.

What Gear Do You Need for a Motorcycle Vacation?

Rental bikes don't come with the gear you've broken in on your own motorcycle, so you're either packing yours, renting from the owner, or buying at your destination. The safest and most practical approach for a vacation rental trip is to cover these essentials:

DOT-certified helmet (or rent one with the bike)
Armored riding jacket
Gloves, boots that cover your ankles, and eye protection
Phone mount and charger
Compact rain layer
Sunscreen and hydration

Most Riders Share owners list helmets, jackets, and gloves as booking add-ons, and some include them free. Filtering search results by gear availability shows which listings come with what you need, making fly and ride motorcycle trips a lot easier to pack for.

Step 6. Coordinate Pickup

Once the owner approves your booking, you'll get the pickup location and their contact info by email. The majority of pickups happen at a mutually agreed public spot or the owner's residence. Many Riders Share owners also offer delivery to airports and hotels for an additional fee, which is especially helpful for fly and ride motorcycle trips where you're landing in a new city without a vehicle.

At pickup, walk around the bike with the owner and document any existing wear through the platform's check-in process. That step protects both sides and keeps the return clean.

Step 7. Return the Bike

Bring the bike back to the agreed location (or arrange return delivery), go through the check-out process, and hand over the keys. Security deposits are refunded within a few days after return, and Riders Share's 24/7 roadside assistance covers towing, battery jumps, fuel delivery, and tire replacement throughout your trip.

Can You Rent a Motorcycle One-Way?

One-way rentals are available on Riders Share, but they need to be coordinated directly with the owner before booking. Not every owner offers them, and there may be a retrieval fee depending on the route and distance. EagleRider is the one platform with structured one-way options between fleet locations, though those come at a higher daily rate with a more limited bike selection.

How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Motorcycle?

Motorcycle rental pricing depends on the bike, the location, and the platform. On Riders Share, motorcycle rental rates start at $23/day, with most motorcycle rentals falling between $50 and $150/day before insurance and fees. Traditional rental companies like EagleRider tend to start at $150 to $300+/day before add-ons. By bike category:

Entry-level cruisers and standards: $38 to $90/day
Mid-tier Harley-Davidsons and BMWs: $80 to $150+/day
Premium touring bikes: $150 to $350+/day

A $100/day motorcycle with standard protection ($25 damage waiver), roadside assistance ($5/day), and the Riders Share service fee totals about $163/day before taxes. That same bike through EagleRider would run $250 to $350/day with comparable coverage. First-time renters on Riders Share get 20% off their first booking automatically, and multi-day motorcycle road trips unlock discounts up to 25%.

How Riders Share Compares to EagleRider and Twisted Road

Fly and Ride Motorcycle Destinations to Book Now

Fly and ride motorcycle travel has become one of the most popular ways to plan a motorcycle road trip. Skip the multi-day ride to get there, fly in, pick up a rental at or near the airport, and start riding the roads you came for on day one. Riders Share owners in all of these cities offer airport and hotel delivery, and you can rent helmets, jackets, and gloves alongside the bike so you're not hauling gear through the terminal.

Miami, Florida

Is It Worth Renting a Motorcycle on Vacation?

A motorcycle rental for travel changes the way you experience a new place. You set the pace, choose the roads, and stop wherever catches your eye. That freedom is what draws most riders to motorcycle touring in the first place, and renting makes it accessible anywhere in the country without owning a bike in every city you visit. Our motorcycle touring guide for beginners goes deeper on route planning and bike selection, but the numbers speak for themselves:

Riders Share rentals run 50%+ less per day than traditional fleet companies
Multi-day discounts take up to 25% off longer motorcycle road trips
First-time renters save 20% on their first booking
You get access to bikes like a Ducati Scrambler, a Harley-Davidson Road King, or a BMW R 1250 GS without any commitment of ownership
Renting from local owners means route recommendations, restaurant tips, and the kind of insider knowledge that no guidebook covers
